2 Queens & A Joker

Review

If You’re looking for a high quality production, with powerful characters and seasoned performance artists in a semi-fictitious setting, Guys in Disguise’s historical epic 2 Queens & a Joker is worth its modest fringe ticket price, and then some. Lost to history, Don Chute: The Messenger is played by Vance Avery, who’s acting credits include a collaborative efforts with Tom Waits, Robert Wilson, and William S Burroughs. He commands the stage with vigour. The two Female Leads Elizabeth 1 (Madelaine Knight), and Mary, Queen of Scots (Cheryl Jameson), play suggestive but captivating monarchs. The dialogue is challenging, often sung with poetic flare. Though there are a few minor slips of the tongue in this early performance. The sheer weight of the script and tongue twisting narrative lends one to forgive the mild slip-ups in its delivery. -Levi Gogerla
