A Book Report: the Musical

Review

The star rating above reflects, in part, my reluctance to be too harsh to a cast of 10 local young kids who have to do some very heavy lifting: they’re on stage together for an hour, with almost no adult help, and have to sing a dozen songs (from “A Spoonful of Sugar” to Oliver!'s “I’d Do Anything”), each with its own choreography. Basically, it’s like an earnest school play that you root for. In the Fringe setting, however, Randy Mueller’s production is outgunned on just about every level, from the less-than-subtle lesson at the end to the dialogue. Does he seriously think kids today spend their summer vacations looking for licorice root? —Michael Hingston
