Absolute Magic

Review

Keith H. Brown’s routine in Absolute Magic goes well beyond clever card tricks and slight-of-hand mastery to deliver one of the most charismatic and air-tight shows I’ve ever seen. His stellar act begins even before he’s stepped on the stage and he maintains a steady ebb of wonderment until you leave. In between his affable volunteer selections and varied tricks, he uses anecdotes and authentic audio visual mementos from his lengthy career to inject genuine character into the show. This isn’t the (understandable) stalling you’ll often see from magicians performing for donations on the street. Brown knows that you’ve purchased a ticket, and he commits to putting on a spectacle to thank you, wowing his audience with excellent dramatic pacing in every reveal. He also goes to truly remarkable lengths to obfuscate any reasonable shred of deception. A card chosen from a live speakerphone call to a patron’s friend via cellphone and a number surreptitiously generated from more than eight audience members are just two examples of the way he earns your trust. The candor Brown uses in manipulating and reacting to his audience is splendid. He’s a personable man who nearly perfected his interactions with people around the globe for years, and he demonstrates that prowess on stage in a must-see performance that’s sure to sellout soon.
