Bountiful

Review

Bountiful does an intriguing job at breaking the fourth wall, bringing the audience uncomfortably close to the lives of four women who share community, chores, songs—and a husband. Yet somehow, from the opening scenes when they welcome us into their lives with harmonious singing, the characters create a palpable feeling of separation between spectator and performer. Us vs. them. This dynamic carries through the play, raising the question—are we really all that different? Inspired by true events and polygamous religions, "Bountiful" will have you examining your beliefs, delving into themes of faith and courage, feminism and patriarchy. The minimalist stage, and clever use of props and wardrobe are appropriate for the raw subject matter, the dashes of humour, and the unsettling reality of the sister wives. —Veronica Petrola
