Candy Bones

Review

Laughing at other people’s pain is just terrific. There’s always a little heartbreak in a joke, and the more pain, the greater the intimacy between the performer and the audience. Such is Candy Bones performer Candy Roberts' latest offering. It’s a one woman show, built on several well-conceived, but at times lackluster, characters. There are clear standouts— the lunchtime spinster, the deer-person. You’ll have picked your favourites early into the hour-long performance. While maybe sometimes a little caustic, the amount of work Roberts has put into this show is impressive. Her use of mixed media is professional. She presents herself honestly, and though not every joke lands, her sincerity is to be commended. There is swearing, so if you’re an older patron who simply can’t stand cussing, maybe avoid this one. The kids seemed into it. Reviewed by Lucas Provencher.
