Caws & Effect

Review

Dressed as ravens and squawking instead of speaking, the Vancouver Mind of a Snail duo utilize hand-painted celluloids, shadow puppets and a sprawling soundtrack over a vintage pair of overhead projectors to captivate their audience, making for an interesting visual and auditory experience with imagery that looks like they were plucked out of a half-remembered storybook from one’s childhood and imagination. The word-balloon script is packed with cheeky humour and animal puns, but the synchronization of the visuals with its original pre-recorded acid jazz soundtrack helps it stand out amidst the other plays this fringe season. Chloe Ziner composes, plays and records the captivating soundtrack to this live large scale shadow theatre spectacle, helping showcase this all-ages production, and pushes the boundaries of a traditional theatre experience. - Levi Gogerla
