Chasing Willie Nelson – A Tribute

When a figure—regardless of their chosen arena—breaches general popularity and finds infamy, their story is often so colossal and varied that it’s difficult to sum up. This could certainly be said for Willie Nelson, the celebrated and (sometimes) chastised singer/songwriter. He's simultaneously a great artist, a decent person, a terrible husband, and an utter ass—a seemingly impossible combination to portray in any form. Regardless, Andrea House attempts it in her original work Chasing Willie Nelson. Done in the style of a classic radio drama (set fittingly in the CKUA sound stage), House guides the audience through a dream about riding the rails through history with Willy and his late son. It's a cheap device, yes, but an effective one. On its surface, Chasing Willie Nelson is a moving tribute to the eponymous country star, handled with bluntness and affection. The songs, though occasionally forced, are magnificent (her version of “Crazy” rivals the great one himself). With her five-piece band, House is successful in capturing the essence of Nelson, urging audiences to follow their dreams. It’s a blatant show to be sure (there’s no time for subtlety here), but one with enormous talent and an admirable message, earning its place as a must see in the 2017 fringe. I was familiar with some Willie Nelson tunes but in Andrea House’s expert hands, the music is reinvented, fresh, and incredibly moving. She is backed by a first-rate band of musicians who regularly tour/appear on their own. Dana Anderson is a great addition as the ghost of Willie who adds comments when the mood strikes. Everyone will enjoy this – couple of F bombs but otherwise family-friendly. Their last show sold out.

Have to admit to being fans of Mat and Andrea. They and the people with them delivered an excellent performance. Although I don’t want to diminish anyone else’s wonderfull performance, I do want to point out the pedal guitarist and goofy improv performer. Worth the horrible downtown road construction. The library parking lot might be the best. I grabbed the first spot I saw that seemed close and ended up walkering my crippled butt about six blocks through the downtown maze.
