Cut! is a play that frequent-fringers will probably already be familiar with. It’s written by Albertan playwright Lyle Victor Albert, and was first performed at the fringe in 1985. This fringe marks its fifth time in the festival. The show revolves around the purgatory of a group of lesser-known cutting room floor characters—Hamlet’s brother, Oedipus’s sister, and Stanley Kowalski’s mother. The 'room full of misfits' story isn't exactly new, but the manner in which this story executes it feels like the kind of sitcom you don't need a laugh track to enjoy. While a few of the script’s laughs may occasionally fall flat, the performers are remarkably strong. Of particular note is Ruby Swekla as Mrs. Kowalski. Not since Danny DeVito appeared on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has an actor so deftly walked the line between caustic grouch and huggable misanthrope. If for no other reason than seeing her performance, this play is worth the ticket price. Reviewed by Lucas Provencher
