Dog’s Misery Swamp

Review

A radioactive swamp is about to be concealed in cement, which could put a rare species of foul-mouthed bird at risk. Why should you care? It’s difficult to say as David Jacobson’s one-man show with a ridiculous cast of characters fails to reveal its plot until halfway through the show. Characters dump exposition in rambling monologues that obscure helpful story-building details, which usually still come too late. Jacobson’s characterizations are lacklustre and mostly involve a slight change in voice pitch. His jokes rely heavily on bathroom humour—much of the plot revolves around bad breath and fecal transplants—which the audience responded to with soft and polite laughter. He struggles to control the emotion and pace of the show, leaving it at a flat line even at what should be its climax. With a confounding narrative and ho-hum characters, this show is as pleasant an experience as halitosis. —Matthew Stepanic
