Edgar Allan

Review

A fantastical take on a pre-pubescent Edgar Allan Poe, this dark musical follows Edgar Allan to boarding school—where he strives to be at the top of his class. The idiosyncratic child speaks like a connivingly intellectual adult and pays no regard to any of the other young students, viewing them all as mere obstacles on his path to victory. That is, until he one day meets his greatest adversary—who is also his new best friend. The two actors playing Edgar Allan and his counterpart are top-notch, and the whole play has an eerie, romantic darkness to it. The soundtrack is beautiful and humour surprises the audience in unexpected places. Still, Edgar Allan's counterpart is too quickly and too easily happy to play a subservient second-fiddle to Edgar Allan. More frequent shifts in the power dynamic between these two would make this already remarkable show all the more interesting to watch. Reviewed by Bryan Saunders.
