Evicted

Review

Evicted, the debut show from new local company Possibly Theatre?, takes on the apocalypse with a zoom lens. In a montage of dramatic snapshot scenes, characters grapple with the knowledge that the world is going to end in one year. Attempting to tackle such a dark topic seriously is not without challenges, and some scenes are more compelling than others. Often, the narrative feels a bit flat and the gravity of the situation comes across unconvincingly. Shallow characterization makes it hard to care about the characters inexplicably doomed fate. Despite this, a handful of moments stand out, such as a lover talking his girlfriend off of a ledge, and a phone message left by an estranged mother for her child. Ultimately though, this attempt at a profound consideration of the end of humanity fails to consistently captivate. Reviewed by Charly Blais.
