Fruit Flies Like A Banana

A strong contender for best use of hoverboards, this whirlwind beats all the stuffing out of classical to make a show that’s wacky, funny and often beautiful. This trio from Massachusetts, in their first Edmonton appearance, have serious musical chops—skills they use to interpret everything from Bach to Billy Joel, Erik Satie to jazz, Mozart to that happy Charlie Brown music. With a name like “The Fourth Wall,” it’s no surprise they favour audience participation. The crowd picks the songs, accompanies the musicians by playing plastic “boomwhackers,” and, in a truly moving moment, becomes an instrument itself in an otherworldly harmony piece. Often irreverent, the musicians use nimble choreography and acrobatics to add some physical ‘zazz to the melodies—although a couple trickier stunts needed a second attempt and some visual gags tended to repeat. Still, with nearly two dozen pieces in less than an hour, it rarely felt rushed and the music was strong throughout. Music geeks rejoice! Reviewed by Josh Marcellin.
