Gangsters in Freaky Land

Review

Prepare for a mobster Quentin Tarantino style meeting a Guillermo Del Toro supernatural story. Throw in a few of the common gangster tropes (mob boss, vendettas, Brooklyn accents) and you have Gangsters in Freaky Land. David Caggiano leads us through this weird world where a turncoat gangster is trying to escape his past and the two mobsters sent to whack him. Along the way we meet a saucy spirit guide with an arsenal of twisted hallucinogens and a penchant for contacting the "other world." The one man show is a great blend of over the top violence and amusing psychedelic paranoia. Caggiano's performance with his expert cast of diverse characters is enjoyable to watch. The characters all have their own gifts and flaws. It feels like Caggiano has been playing each character for a number of years as we quickly learn the mannerisms of each character so there's no confusion on who is being portrayed. I should also add that Caggiano's Christopher Walken impersonation is spot on. Reviewed by Stephan Boissonneault.
