Good Improv

Review

Good Improv—it's not good. Fringe offers on average a bevy of improvised shows that are showcased throughout the festival. With that in mind, not all are going to be sidesplitting. Even so, Good Improv starts off promising with the performers basing their show on an audience member’s quirks, and goes from there. What follows is three performers engaging in high school drama class-level shenanigans, with a hip-hop edge. It would appear the minds behind Good Improv bit off a little more than they could chew, as both the improvised comedy and improvised music often fall flat—hindered more by the performer’s tendency to scramble to find any consistency in their comedic displays. Improv is a difficult thing to judge, as everyone’s taste is different. But if you’re going to come to the Edmonton Fringe, you got to bring more to the table than just lunch period class clown buffoonery. -Jake Pesaruk

Good Improv was tons of fun! The concept is something you don’t expect- the performers take an audience member and use facts about their lives to create raps and different improvised sketches. Each scene took a different turn and left you guessing how they were going to incorporate the trivia about the audience member. The jokes were creative, the raps were entertaining, and they knew how to make something mundane into something comedic.

This was a great show. Funny and these guys can actually rap.

I went to see this one too, and I agree with Jake. This one was terrible. These guys are not funny. Especially that one guy Dan it’s one of the worst so-called actors I’ve ever seen. This really is High School drama class 101. I realize that improv is difficult to do, so after the show I gave them another chance. I want to listen to their good improv podcast, and sadly none of those are funny either. Stay away from this tripe.

The review is unnecessarily harsh and inaccurate, and Rod’s comments are off base and seem a tad personal. I’ve seen Good Improv before, and these guys do clever, dry humour. They can go big and crazy but usually show subtlety and restraint that is quite funny. Now, if you expect an improv show to be filled with over-the-top antics, well, good for you. You’ll get loads of that in this city. I’ve seen a lot of it, and what you’ll most often get is a bunch of overexcited adults screaming on stage at each other as if they are putting on a play for children. Good Improv is not that, and that’s a good thing.

This was a fantastic show! I watched their Saturday show with my friends and these guys were so hilarious!!

Plus we were expecting the rap to be super cringey like it is in other improv shows but we were pretty impressed by how good it was.

Hard to believe the reviewer gave them 1 star, and they obviously have some haters, but they gave us a great show.

    Will recommend.
