Harold of Galactus

Review

Go see how the pros do it. Chris Craddock and Mike Meer, with Jacob Banigan on special effects, stage a master class in superhero improv. Each performance, Craddock and Meer generate a superhero persona based on audience suggestions. The night this reviewer attended, the suggestion was ‘gaslight’, which prompted ethical concerns (a psychologically abusive superhero?). So the superhero Gaslight controlled gases more so than individual’s minds (but was nonetheless temporarily evil). Improvs are a ragged narrative exercise, a frolick, and both performers are ace at the art form. Sob-inducing hilarity blended with trenchant social critique. Sure, when the Bernie Sanders images came up on the Garneau screen, and there was that resounding applause and laughter, it was clear that this was just a love-in, but live theatre is a greatest sort of love-in, no? Banigan’s background and special effects were a top-notch complement. Reviewed by Jay Smith.
