Hip. Bang! Improv

Review

Hip. Bang! Improv delivers many key things you want out of a two-man improv show at the fringe. After a restaged entrance where the audience is conscripted to help in lieu of a designated hype squad, performers Tom and Devin grab a couple audience suggestions to fuel their improvisation. They weave a narrative with at least some semblance of a beginning, middle and end. They’ll try to make you laugh along the way and they’ll probably succeed thanks to the bond they clearly share as friends—welcoming the rest of the audience into their game. It’s slightly disappointing, though, that the only real recurring improv game or device I spotted was an issued-challenge to list several items within a category. (In my performance, train yard security guard characters clashed with obsessed locomotive fans, and one challenge was to name 10 types of train cars.) Both Tom and Devin’s delivery is flexible and nuanced, but as far as improv goes, there's nothing fancy here. Hip. Bang! Improv takes aim at enough of the fundamentals for you to have a good time, but you won’t likely find anything that pushes the improvisation envelope here. Reviewed by Kevin Pennyfeather.
