Hip.Bang! Presents Surveil

Review

In this award-winning comedy, duo Hip.Bang! returns to the Edmonton Fringe with an immersive look at modern surveillance and the invasion of user’s privacy.  Posing as a mock entrepreneurial seminar Devin Mackenzie, Tom Hill, and Alex Tindal’s new social enterprise “Spot” is poised to revolutionize the audience’s social life. What follows slowly unravels into a pervasive look at both the audience’s social media habits, and a sneaky look into their data usage and online profiles. There is a mandatory waiver the audience must sign before entry into the venue as the Hip.Bang company use various cameras and microphones hidden throughout the event to spy on the unsuspecting audience, listening in on conversations between them that were secretly recorded before the show. The performance is done in good faith, as nothing extremely personal is ever revealed but also serves as a humorful if cautionary tale that one’s online presence should be more closely safeguarded and monitored. – Levi Gogerla
