Hockey Night at the Puck & Pickle Pub

Review

Whether you’ve already put your deposit down for that Connor McDavid tattoo or you wouldn’t know a slapshot from a Slim Jim, you’re going to enjoy Hockey Night. Slyly self-aware and just the right amount of dirty, the B.C. duo of Jon Paterson and Ryan Gladstone connect hockey—and the many complicated ways we need it—to the hoser id. Sit down for a cold one in the titular Puck & Pickle Pub and meet stats nerds, randy cougars, wistful old codgers and the classic Canada-USA rivalry. The performance is pleasingly loose, rolling and reacting with the crowd improv style—even asking for feedback if a particularly rude punchline was offsides. Hockey Night rewards the faithful, scoring often by referencing glory-days names like Dave Semenko and Lanny McDonald. But it’s broad and thoughtful enough to dangle laughs from anyone. It really is Canada’s game, eh? Reviewed by Josh Marcellin.
