How I Lost One Pound, The Musical!

Review

Imagine going to your middle-aged aunt's house and sitting in her living room listening to her ramble about her grown kids and her favourite songs for an eternity. Now imagine watching that whole interaction as a one-woman show. That's exactly what you get in How I Lost One Pound The Musical. Writer and performer Lesley Carlberg delivers sloppy middle-aged mom ramblings about Facebook weight loss facts, unfulfilled dreams, and of course, all the overdone wine jokes. It’s made worse by the fact that she forgets her cues at least five times and the audience doesn’t feel like singing along to “Wannabe” with her. Led by equally sloppy production, awkward song changes and dancing, there's nothing clever nor remotely interesting to take from it except a bad case of secondhand embarrassment. It advertises itself as a musical, but what you get is just Carlberg singing self-consciously behind "Sandra Dee" and dancing around the stage to "California" with a small Jim Carrey plushy. She claims you can lose one pound if you view her show 25 times. But I'd rather lose one pound cringing to Amy Schumer skits than see How I Lost One Pound ever again. Reviewed by Michelle Guthrie.
