jem rolls ATTACKS THE SILENCE

Review

Edinburgh’s Jem Rolls doesn’t just attack the silence: he preys on it, jumps on it and rips it apart with words as his weapon of choice. This hour-long set is a packaged collection of his boisterous spoken-word poetry, interspersed with scripted monologue, although it’s hard to tell where the poetry ends and where it begins again. It’s also hard to tell exactly what this whole show is about, since his poetry covers everything from listless audiences, colonialism, love and sweating on stage. Either way, Rolls is a riot to watch, but may be too much if you’re expecting a low-key reading. —Kate Black
