Jem Rolls: I, IDIOT

Review

I, IDIOT is a journey to the centre of an old Englishman's mind. Jem Rolls, the owner of said mind, sounds like John Oliver speaking haltingly, though deftly, on the foibles of human decision-making, i.e., being an idiot. His skillful, introspective spoken-word ramblings jive well with the older crowd. That said, his performance doesn't dive too far into the 'old man doesn't understand modernity' trope. And that is an easy pitfall into which one can fall. His ideas, while not novel (there's an obvious Donald Trump reference), are delivered with grand enthusiasm, overwhelming charm, and sprite-like physicality. In all, though, there's some real sincerity to Rolls' performance, and a kind of acceptance that comes with his theory that humans are, in fact, pretty dumb. -Doug Johnson
