Josephine

Review

Josephine is a one-woman play performed by Tymisha Harris that takes the audience through the true-life story of Josephine Baker, who at different points in her career was a dancer, civil rights activist, and French spy. Harris gives a knockout performance as Baker, singing and dancing her way through Missouri, Paris, and New York. Her vocals are extremely strong, especially in tunes like Strange Fruit, and her dancing is sultry and seductive (Baker originally rose to fame because of her erotic dancing, after all). Harris’ banter and interaction with the audience is spot on, leaving the crowd roaring with laughter. At times hilarious, intriguing, and educational, Josephine is a marvelous look at the life of a fascinating woman. - Alexander Sorochan
