Kill Shakespeare

Review

Thou Art Here productions took a huge risk when deciding to adapt the graphic novel series Kill Shakespeare to the stage—a risk that paid off immensely. Although not the traditional theatrical fare one might expect from the Edmonton Fringe, Kill Shakespeare honours the original adapted source material while injecting inventive techniques to the stage. The performance is set up with projections of the original graphic novel’s panels in the background while the actors take the foreground. What follows is an immersive story through a world in which all of Shakespeare’s creations collide in a war for supremacy. All of the performers involved bring immense energy to their characters as they display a wide range of voice work. They constantly cycle through many of Shakespeare’s beloved fictional personalities, but what shines above all else in this production is the dedication to the overlap of sound effects produced by the performers and even the audience. Viewers are encouraged to boo, cheer and even hiss as characters fight and fumble amongst themselves. Kill Shakespeare consistently holds the audience’s attention and offers the joy of both a comic and play in one enthralling experience. Reviewed by Jake Pesaruk.
