Mad Fantastic Maid of God: Joan of Arc

Review

This fast-paced account of Joan of Arc stars Melissa Blackwood as “la Pucelle,” leading the French army against the English at the age of 17. Playwright Kenneth Brown dishes out this well-known piece of history in a snack-sized format—which is a bit of a double-edged sword, as it sometimes just feels like the Cole’s Notes version of the story. Brown lightly skips from scene-to-scene without really adding anything substantial or imaginative to the narrative. Thankfully, supporting actress Ellie Heath brings a sparkle to the show, as she rises to the task of playing Joan’s mother and father, the Dauphin, the heavenly voices in Jean’s head, the soldiers, and any other character in the story with uproarious expression and wit.
