MAGIC

Review

Calgary's Chris Visser brings the magic in this enjoyable, if uneven, hour of entertainment for kids and families. It starts strong with some old-school illusion and sleight-of-hand—I'm still wondering where that balloon he swallowed went. Kudos, too, for interactions with the young audience: the delight of a young boy watching a dove magically appear can't be faked. The show loses some momentum halfway with a too-long and confusing bit that has Visser interacting with a pre-recorded Minecraft video segment. By the time we get to the big reveal, small attention spans have flagged. Ditto for the grand finale escape—it lacks mystery and oomph. Still, Visser does have an easy way with the elementary-aged audience and is rewarded with their enthusiasm. And, as parents know, that's a piece of magic easily worth the price of admission.
