Marv n’ Berry presents: Imagination

Review

Marv n’ Berry presents: Imagination is a top-notch sketch comedy show and a mediation on pop culture and theatre. Imagination, drenched in television and the shitty machismo of top 40 radio, forms and transforms how we tackle the narratives that appear before us—on stage but also, impliedly, in real life. Sketch comedy sometimes feels like a barrage of overly unrelated funny moments. But Imagination nails it—but this works methodically, a lesson in rhetoric of the imagination. Imagine inversions (What if a man staged his own intervention? What if a father lost his son at Telus World of Science, but then started looking for his own dad instead? What if 40 is the new 80 and women induced to feel bad about not being young can be flagrantly ancient instead?). Imagine synecdoche—a man gropes his partner in terror as they watch and rewatch the menu clip on a horror movie DVD. Imagine substitution—a man cradles an invisible baby, which then transforms into a football. The echo chamber of television and popular culture resonates here, but is pried apart. A man, perhaps obviously an American, insists on wanting a gun on a tourist fishing trip. An amorous couple, who admits their understanding of organized crime is the basis of having watched every Sopranos episode, tries out to be hit men for the mafia. Throughout, we’re reminded of the evanescent power of our imaginative processes. Also, it’s very, very funny. Reviewed by Jay Smith.
