Merk du Soleil

The show opens with overly long guitar strumming that somehow begins to feel slightly awkward, perhaps setting the tone for whats to come. The play suffers from a serious case of ADD, as the story line goes in all sorts of directions simultaneously, some of which are a bit confusing. The three performers enter the stage in eclectic, clashing outfits that include neon spandex, colourful headbands, and glittery bodysuits reminiscent of the 1980s. Gold streamers hang in the background, and its hard to discern whether the play takes place against the backdrop of a circus or a school gymnasium talent show. But the odd decor, sense of confusion, and randomness all add to the show's fun, low budget, campy charm. The play does not take itself too seriously (in a good way), as evident by the use of ridiculous props and styling.  The performers are full of energy, and they are fun to watch as they entertain with frantic, high energy spiels, a death defying stunt of doom, passionate guitar solos, and absurd songs and dancing. —Leanne Curtis

This show was SUCH a hoot! All three performers (plus their cheeky musician) were a delight to watch, and frankly I am impressed at their stamina. It is impressive that they can fit so much hilarity and spectacle into 45 minutes! I certainly hope to make it to another performance, as fun-spirited audience interactions with the titular “Merk” (or should I say, “Jerk”) allow the show to change and adapt to its audience every show. Very enjoyable whether you are with little Fringers or are seeking more adult-oriented humor (seems contradictory, but its true!). So bring your friends, your family, and even your minister!
