Murder Mime the Musical

Review

Here's the thing about being an opera star: it requires a stellar set of pipes. Max Barnacus has the voice and seems to be on a trajectory for fame, until he is rendered permanently mute and his life goes into a tailspin. Losing his voice is only the beginning of Max's troubles, as the production delivers blow after blow to its leading man, its script punctuated with moments of satire and dark humour. There were several strong comedic moments and well-executed musical numbers—not an easy feat given the venue's limited space—but there were also instances when the situations began to reach just a little too far, detracting from a production concept that does have potential. The cast—many of whom tackled multiple characters—delivered each moment with enthusiasm and solid comic timing, but the second half dragged slightly as Max met new strife, making one wonder how much more the poor guy was going to be required to endure before he reached a solution or was put out of his misery. —Meaghan Baxter
