Off Book: the Improvised Musical

Review

Improv is indeed a tricky business that is not for the faint of heart - for both audience and actors alike. Invariably, it’s a crapshoot; always hinging on the mercy of the crowd and the wit of the players. Add the risky curveball that is live musical accompaniment, and you’ve got Rapid Fire Theatre’s Off Book: The Improvised Musical. Admittedly, I'm no fan of improv as it is so often a cringeworthy disaster littered with flat jokes, dead silence, and stage hogs. Mercifully, Rapid Fire Theatre’s take on the concept was (mostly) bereft of these issues, providing a lively, clever, and fun show. At least, the version I saw was. As every show is going to be different, it’ll be impossible to say whether or not every incarnation will be as good. But for true fans of improv, isn't that part of the experience? Either way, to watch a group come up with a story, characters, and songs enough to fill a whole hour is something to admire—even if it does occasionally fall flat. Reviewed by Buchanan Hunter
