“Perk up, pianist!”

Review

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a concert pianist? Well, you won’t find out during this performance. What you will learn though is that becoming one isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Sarah Hagen, Canadian concert pianist turned comedic/musical fringer, delivers a canny and playful account of her rise to the top of the concert pianist ladder and how it’s affected her personal life including her inability to find and keep a long-term romance. It’s clear Sarah is in her element in both the comedic and pianist roles; she entertains the audience by playing classical piano and detailing her romantic dealings with the likes of Mozart and her favourite Rachmaninoff (yes, I’m aware they are no longer alive but it’s not clear if Sarah knows yet). If this performance doesn’t perk you up, there’s likely not much else that will. Reviewed by Katie Robertson.
