Puck Bunnies

Review

I don’t like to gossip but … you should probably go watch Puck Bunnies. A hockey-themed post-high-school Mean Girls performed in drag, this comedy from Guys in Disguise follows the “Puck Bunnies,” a self-professed elite group of women who are "drawn to the sport because of their attraction to hockey players or the possibility of hooking up with one of them.” Tammy and Tonya, played by Darrin Hagen and Trevor Schmidt, are the core members of the group, while Tina (Jason Hardwick) is the new pledge under consideration after the messy departure of former bunny Angela. New mom Tammy’s relationship with the team captain has taken a downturn after the birth of the child she doesn’t really want except for Instagram fodder. Tonya is dating the goalie, but always seems to be walking in on her boyfriend’s male roommate enthusiastically assisting with his pelvic stretches. Tina is their dimwitted understudy, whose own team boyfriend scandalously disappeared in the middle of the night. Underneath all the hilarious cattiness and icy remarks runs a thread of something sad. There’s a dark side to these girls lives that are lived only “for the boys.” You’ll quickly find yourself sucked into the small-time drama that rules the rink. Reviewed by Charly Blais.
