Scorch

Review

Scorch is, undoubtedly, a controversial play. The main character, Kess, spends the first part of the play trying to feel their way through the fraught world of gender dynamics; and no one gender seems to fully encompass them. Eventually, they start up a relationship with Jules, a woman Kess met on the internet, who doesn't know that Kess was born with female genitalia. Their relationship progresses and things take a dark turn. The play is inspired by real events that occurred in the U.K. Julie Niuboi, who plays Kess, does a fantastic job in the abstract, disjointed, but perfectly expositional dialogue in the one-person production. Similarly, the production values (lighting, occasionally terrifying audio, and props) are nearly unparalleled in the Fringe. -Doug Johnson
