She Was A Great Dad

Review

Johnny Swinton, a character based on Billy Tipton, is a musician born biologically female who begins to present as a man in order to gain opportunities and success playing jazz music in the 1950s United States. Portraying a myriad of well-defined and interesting characters, Susan Jeremy utilizes precision and craft to jump between the physical bodies and voices of the characters in her brilliantly written script. An energetic and heartfelt performance left the audience with a whirlwind of questions surrounding gender expectations, opportunities inside of a binary thinking system, as well as the startling and confounding reality that individuals existing outside of the ideal are made into media commodities. An incredibly generous and talented performer, Susan Jeremy will have you laughing, crying, and reassessing where your own gender prejudice hides.  —Alexandra Dawkins
