Sirens

Review

A couple celebrates their 25th anniversary on a cruise, and within the first few moments of the play, the thin veneer of their marriage begins to erode. The husband Sam Abrams, a one-hit wonder, reveals he’s been having coffee with women he meets online, and his wife rightfully feels betrayed and ends the marriage. Instead of dealing with their issues, Abrams answers the sweet call of a siren and jumps overboard. Too much of the action centres on the irredeemable Abrams, who apparently just needed to experience a near-death experience with a mythical creature to realize he loves his wife. Strong performances from Stephanie Wolfe (as Rose Adelle Abrams) and Louise Lambert (as every other woman), vibrant costumes, and interesting set decoration are lost in a show that frustratingly fails to properly answer why couples choose a dissatisfying status quo. – Matthew Stepanic
