Six Fine Lines

Review

Mack Gordon charmingly recites his own pieces of prose, stories from his life, and quotes from famous writers in this show. But the many parts of his heavily structured lyrical essay don’t quite come together to form a cohesive piece. His longer paragraphs of creative writing drag on a bit too much, and could use a bit more emotion and artistry in their delivery. The “Family Feud” and “Newlyweds” game shows thrown into his show are cute, but seem gimmicky and out-of-place. Gordon seems to want to explore the idea of using other people’s stories and words to learn lessons about your own life and your own self—and that’s great—but it doesn't get beyond the idea stage. Light on substance and heavy on fat, this is a fine first draft and an interesting concept, but it needs more fluidity, better delivery, and more substance. Reviewed by Bryan Saunders.
