Stains

Review

Stains is a satirical frack you to the “Harper Government.” Welcoming the audience to a meeting of The Ministry of Stainable Resources, sisters of the Ministry, Toluene and Ethylene, explain that their mission is to set free “heirloom organic matter trapped down below.” Subtle, yet wickedly clever stabs at all things right of centre saturate the script and there is even a lovely little song-and-dance number about cleaning up oil spills. But when Ethylene starts to question the greasy way of the stain, Toulene is quick to keep her in line—“whatever Ministry and Industry consent to do in bed is their business!” The play gets a little weird, however, when the Queen of the Beavers appears in a vision to Ethylene. Despite the odd beaver dream, this is still a gem of a Canadian comedy. —Kathleen Bell
