Sweethearts Of The 49th

Review

Finding my seat in the theatre, it was difficult not to notice the sea of white hair in the crowd. I chalked it up to a craving for nostalgia from some older “Sweethearts.” With the play taking place in Lethbridge, I was a bit worried I was going to have a hard time getting engulfed by the plot. I was pleasantly surprised; this play is filled with laughter, love, and authenticity that I could easily relate to growing up as a minority in Canada. Michelle Diaz definitely let her light shine; I could not help but admire her outstanding vocal presence, she stole the show for me. Etta George House, Madelaine Knight, and Gianna Read-Skelton did an outstanding job of showing how strong; brave and supportive women were, are and will continue to be. Definitely check out Sweethearts of the 49th to get a taste of diversity, acceptance and what it is to be Canadian. – Alexis Reid
