Szeretlek: A Hungarian Love Story

Review

Szeretlek: A Hungarian Love Story is a new addition to fringe this year. It tells the true story of romance in post-war Hungary between performer Zita Nyarady’s grandparents. It’s an ambitious show to say the least. Music, dance, interview voiceovers, sweets, and audience participation have all been thrown into an incredibly tight hour. For the most part, that ambition pays off. There’s a lot of creativity in this show, but there are a couple of awkward bits too. One segment in particular sort of feels like an episode of The Office in which Michael Scott explains the Hungarian administrative divisions of 1941 to 1944. That said, even the awkward bits seem to add to the charm and sincerity of the play. This show has a lot of heart and best of all you actually come away from it feeling like you know a little extra about a part of the world that you rarely hear about. Bring your significant other.
