Tales She Tells

Review

Equal parts engaging and alluring, Tales She Tells’ structure relies on the audience’s imagination to tell its story. Based in Ireland, a young woman dealing with the loss of her mother looks for comfort in the tragically romantic folktales she was told as a girl. The understated stage decoration and relatively simple narrative only serve to highlight Lydia Riding’s impressive performance. Maybe even more impressive is that Riding is actually just stepping in for usual performer and the play’s author, Tess Mc Manus, for the Edmonton Fringe dates. The play, even with a flimsy narrative, is buoyed by a strong performance and Ireland’s treasured myths. —Shannon Kovalsky
