TEDxRFT: Improvised Ted Talks

Review

If you’re in search of inspired laughter, look no further than the newest Fringe offering from one of the best improvised theatre groups in Edmonton—Rapid Fire Theatre. Unlike the typical TEDx format, improv veterans Julian Faid and Kory Mathewson have done no preparation or research, and each has made the other actor’s slides and asks the audience to suggest the title and topic. Though Mathewson didn’t create much of a cohesive argument and his talk on bike culture barely touched the title “Sentient Machines,” his confidence and wit still drew barrels of laughs from the audience. Faid was hilarious as he aptly handled and incorporated the strange surprises—like a duck photo-shopped with human arms and impromptu group singing exercises—that Mathewson had littered throughout his slideshow. It’s a smart improvised format that—as the tagline suggests—will leave you with tons of jokes that are worth spreading. —Matthew Stepanic
