The 11 O’clock Number! The Improvised Musical

Review

There’s a certain skill in improvisation, and even more so doing it set to music. This quintet improv troupe does it seamlessly with goofy aplomb. Creating a musical on the spot is no easy feat, yet The 11 O’Clock Number somehow pulls together from perky opening number, to villain’s theme song, to closing reprise medley of the entire performance. The group builds their musical around every day slices of Edmonton life anyone can relate to, taking audience cues of occupation and characters to colour their fresh canvas. What ensues is hilarious absurdity as our actors jump in and out of scenes, changing characters and adapting to spontaneous shifts in dialogue and conflict with astounding ease. It’s not perfect—double casting leaves character personalities confused, but the imperfection in the moment makes it all the more entertaining. The 11 O’Clock Number is undoubtedly the perfect choice for any fringe-goer looking for an hour to just switch off and enjoy a bit of nonsensical humour set to jaunty piano ditties.
