The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Review

Welcome to The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee! Get out your dictionaries, folks, because “the bee” is one heck of a wild ride. This playful musical from Uniform Theatre features a ragtag group of elementary kids brought together by one mission: to spell. All six children are determined to walk out with the trophy rather than a consolation juice box. Run by a former spelling champ herself, Mrs. Rona Peretti (Gianna Read-Skelton), along with unhinged vice principal Douglas Panch (Owen Emblau) and criminal-turned-comfort-counselor Mitch Mahoney (Damon Pitcher), the rules of this bee are strict and the competition is fierce. As the contest moves along, you are introduced to each participant and their unique backstories, filled with both triumphs and tribulations at home. Some songs feel clunky in their arrangement, but a brilliant performance from a talented cast mostly smoothes over any awkwardness. Excellent choreography keeps the audience immersed, and a bit of fun audience participation in the form of additional spelling bee contestants chosen from the crowd went off without a hitch. The kids are the real stars here, and each adult actor playing them fully takes on the role with an exuberance that makes the stakes feel real. Who will you cheer for? Reviewed by Charly Blais
