The Alien Baby Play

Review

Playing Bethany, 15 months into her pregnancy with the titular alien baby, Jesse Ardem really shines in this one-woman production. She’s a woman on the verge who never quite approaches actual madness: her frenetic ramblings on the nature of reality and belonging instead seeming tender or profound. Her story explores the simultaneously grotesque and gorgeous realities of female embodiment and capacity for reproduction. She is both the Madonna and the Whore who communicates and copulates with the intercessory, otherworldly “Gabe” (named for the archangel Gabriel). Any quibbles have more to do with a bit of an uneven script and not with this performance of it. – Lynsey Grosfield
