The Exquisite Hour

Do you consider yourself to have a wide base of general knowledge? Are you satisfied with what you know? If not, perhaps you too could benefit from Mrs. Darimont’s 22 volume compendium. In Teatro La Quindicina’s comedic production, The Exquisite Hour, quintessential everyman and resigned bachelor Zachary Teale is sipping bourbon lemonade in his backyard as usual, when a mysterious woman interrupts his peace to question what he knows. Reluctantly giving her an hour of his time, she reveals she is there to sell him encyclopedias, and what ensues is unlike any sales pitch you might have heard before. They set out on a journey of the imagination sponsored by the letter “H,” traversing such topics as St Hubert, the Hohenzollerns, and Hannibal of Carthage in make-believe scenes—testing out the power of random encyclopedia entries to inspire conversation. Somewhere along the way, chemistry builds between this odd coupling, and the dynamic begins to change. Profound, heartfelt, and funny, this play is truly an hour well spent. Belinda Cornish and Jeff Haslam embody their characters with a subtle and warm spirit that draws you in and holds you. Reviewed by Charly Blais

The writing was fine, but no surprises. Everything in the plot was predictable. The acts though were very very good. Especially the actress who also played in “no exit”, god she is so good! I loved her in both shows!!
