The Glam-A-Rays Present Debonair Desires

Review

This Fringe debut by local group The Glam-a-Rays is a promising, if uneven, addition to Edmonton’s burlesque scene. Hosted by the strongly-confident Queen C—her rapping and spoken-word interludes are a highlight—this cabaret-style show mainly consists of three ladies singing strip-karaoke to live music. The girls are keen and fun, but some lack the singing chops to carry out a solo performance. There’s a welcome nod to sex-positivity, but they somewhat lack diversity in body shapes: all hew cleanly to accepted societal ideals. Beautiful women getting naked may be a safe crowd-pleaser, but this show just misses being campy fun or subversively dangerous.   – Josh Marcellin

This was an amazing show. Live music played by a band that knows their way around their instruments, catchy tunes and amazing performances by all 3 girls and the MC that kept my attention the whole way through. The costumes were gorgeous and flashy and varied. Each number had it’s own emotional atmosphere and feel and seemed to play to their unique strengths and talents. The performers did a wonderful job of comming off stage and walking around the room as they sang and that made the show a truly immersive exerience. I will definitely be attending more Glam-A-Rays show in the future and am excited to see what acts they will come up with next. 10/10 would recommend to a friend to come see this Fringe show.
