The Great American Songbook Cabaret

Review

Dive into the music of the Great American Songbook era of the early to mid 20th century, when Broadway boomed and jazz standards were the standard. The Great American Songbook Cabaret boasts a talented band of local musicians breathing life into showstopping classics penned in or inspired by the 1920s, '30s, and '40s. Memorable vocals complemented by an impressive brass section, upright bass, drums, and piano will have you tapping your toes the whole way through. The nine songs are threaded together with a predictable confessional that follows first love to heartbreak, but the focus here is on the music rather than the narrative. As much as the performance brings the audience back, a lack of set decor or atmospheric lighting dampens the effect somewhat. For fans of Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Cole Porter and their contemporaries, this musical hour won’t disappoint. Reviewed by Charly Blais.
