The Importance of Being Earnest

Review

Oscar Wilde’s timeless 19th-century work of dazzling language and wit still kills in 2018. The bon mots and subtle, winking jokes could overwhelm an unrefined cast, but local company Empress of Blandings is stacked with fine actors: Rochelle Laplante’s is elegantly severe as Lady Bracknell; Maggie Salopek dials in pitch-perfect high camp for Gwendolen Fairfax; and Rory Turner is a standout with his Algernon Moncrieff, playing the bounding bachelor with zest and sparkling mischief. Solid performers with classic material, this fresh Earnest adaptation—remaining faithful to the 1895 original, besides a couple clever Alberta references—is funny and sure to delight smart audiences. – Josh Marcellin
