The Inventor of All Things

Review

The Inventor of All Things is a sincere, colourful and yet paradoxically dry performance that struggles to keep momentum throughout the show. Written and performed by Jem Rolls, The Inventor of All Things tells the story of Leo Szilard, a nuclear physicist whose work proves instrumental in America getting ahead of the nuclear arms race with Nazi Germany. While Rolls works hard throughout the performance—his voice booming throughout the stage and his body enthusiastically twisting to and fro during the show—the cadence is interrupted with an awkward speaking style and the (though later endearing) insistence of producing his own sound effects. Overall, this show takes interesting source material and comes close to making it entertaining, but it’s more akin an passionate lecture than a show. Reviewed by Chris Berthelot.
