The Real Inspector Hound

Review

Two veteran theatre critics sit upstage (facing the action and the Varscona audience) ready to review a multi-murder mystery set in an upscale country manor. These critics worry more about their personal affairs—infidelity rumours and praise from their fellow literati—than parsing the mystery in front of them. Their conversation forms a subplot that ebbs in and out the main story in wholly original ways. At first The Real Inspector Hound seems like its melodrama, dense exposition and overt physical characterization exists for excellent comedic purposes only, but careful repetition and surreal writing breaks theatrical walls you might‘ve never imagined, adding to the smart humour of the delivered lines and the performers’ movements. Sentences run intentionally long to establish character relationships in single breaths, and exceedingly convenient phone calls and radio transmissions help advance a hilarious story that packs enough twists to form a stick of Twizzlers liquorice. - Kevin Pennyfeather
