The Seminar: Breakthrough!

Review

Part sales pitch, part daytime TV panel show, The Seminar: Breakthrough! satirizes the beauty and self-help industries. “Choose to change!” our three perky hosts get us to chant en masse. It’s quite a feat that they maintain their manic energy throughout a full hour, flashing us with 1000-watt smiles that make your face ache just to look at. But even with this intense/terrifying cheer, there are moments when Breakthrough! slides into a lull. They throw a lot of ideas at the wall and not all of them stick—especially the ending, which takes a twist for the dramatic that feels out of step with everything else we’ve seen.  —Bruce Cinnamon

A parody of shock TV and the commercialization of the beauty industry. Funny as well as visually appealing (especially for the young male at heart). A good moral lesson hidden underneath a lot of action and off-colour body humour. Warning: a lot of button pushing. Not for the prudish.
